5 Characteristics of a Good Quality Yoga Mat
Yoga mats are indispensable for physical exercises. A yoga mat helps to improve the coordination and balance of your body during your workout. The purchase decision of a yoga mat largely depends on personal fondness and needs. This article aims to discuss the characteristics that should be kept in mind when purchasing a yoga mat.
Various raw materials (like PVC Resin Powder, Polyvinyl Chloride, Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE), Jute, Cork etc.) are used for yoga mats. Considering the grasp, an elastic mat made out of natural rubber can be a great choice. However, the odour of the new rubber mat is somewhat odd!
Thick mats are comfortable and give more protection. In general, the thickness of the yoga mat varies between 3mm to 6mm. However, 13mm and 15mm thick yoga mats are also available in the market. It is advisable to go for at least 5mm thickness. PVC is often used to provide high quality and high density.
Sturdiness cannot be ignored at any cost. If your yoga mat is not strong enough, you may need to purchase them more frequently. So, your yoga mat should last at least one and a half year, even if you use it regularly.

Due to dirt and sweat, your mat gets uncleaned. High-density PVC mats provide thick cushioning and, at the same time, easy to clean.
Eco-friendly yoga mats are safe options for your health as well as for the environment. Material like TPE can be easily moulded and reused but cannot be recycled. Synthetic rubber materials are also not as safe as it contains toxic substances. Jute, cotton and cork mats are few ecofriendly options. Certain mats are available in the market with one side jute/cotton material, and other side is made out of Polymer Environmental Friendly Resin.
Material and thickness have a little place to compromise. The material should not be harmful to our health as well as to the environment. Thickness and strength should be good if we plan for regular exercises. Being a yoga instructor, as I practice yoga twice a day. So, I always use a pure cotton single bedsheet on my yoga mat at the time of exercise and wash it on alternate days.
